Tens of thousands of fans roared in excitement Friday as Bruce Springsteen and other artists opened India's first major rock show, a seven-hour extravaganza for human rights.
The musicians kicked off the New Delhi leg of the "Human Rights Now" world concert tour with a rendition of the Bob Marley reggae classic "Get Up, Stand Up (stand up for your rights)."The huge Jawaharlal Nehru stadium resounded with the cheers of tens of thousands of fans, most of them young people and many of whom traveled to New Delhi from other parts of the vast south Asian country.
"I came all the way from Bombay to see Bruce Springsteen," said Vibha Ruia, 17.
It was the first time an Indian audience ever has seen such chart-busting rock musicians, the massive sound system, giant television screens and elaborate stage common to Western rock extravaganzas.
