A leftist labor coalition, responding to reports of an imminent agreement on the operation of strategic U.S. military bases, denounced any such deal Friday as a betrayal of Philippine sovereignty.

The Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), or May One Movement, issued a statement criticizing recent meetings between U.S. and Philippine officials in Washington, where the sides were reported near agreement on the size of an aid package in exchange for use of the bases."The KMU . . . condemns this treacherous act of the government in betraying the people and selling our nation's sovereignty for a price," the statement said.
