Mohawk Indians threatened Friday to go to war with Canada to stop police raids on their reserves aimed at seizing contraband cigarettes.
Mike Mitchell, grand chief of the Mohawk Council at the Akwesasne Indian reserve, which straddles the U.S.-Canada border near Cornwall, Ontario, was angry over a raid carried out Thursday by 250 police officers. They seized $160,000 worth of cigarettes and arrested seven people.Mitchell met with federal officials in Ottawa Friday to discuss the issue. No progress was made, but the two sides agreed to meet again in November, he said.
