George Orwell, author of the anti-totalitarian novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four," will be published in the Soviet Union, joining exiled writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn, whose works have been unavailable in his homeland for a quarter of a century, it was announced Friday.
Sergei Zalygin, editor of the magazine Novy Mir, told UPI that Solzhenitsyn, 70, a dissident author who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1970 and now lives in Cavendish, Vt., will be published next year in the prestigious literary monthly.The Soviet news agency Tass said Novy Mir also will publish Orwell's chilling 1949 classic "Nineteen Eighty-Four," a prophetic novel describing man's dehumanization in a mechanistic, totalitarian world. The British novelist's biting criticism of totalitarian regimes drew comparisons to dictator Josef Stalin's rule from 1924-53.
