President Roh Tae-woo of South Korea will address the General Assembly next Tuesday in the first speech to the United Nations by a South Korean head of state.
On Wednesday North Korea's first deputy minister for foreign affairs, Kang Sok Ju, will make his first appearance before the General Assembly.The North Korean Mission reported Kang would speak but gave no details.
A senior South Korean official told reporters Friday that Roh would deliver a major speech and call for a "conceptual breakthrough" on reuniting the peninsula divided since the end of World War II.
South and North Korea have only non-voting observer status in the 159-member General Assembly because of the division.
The South Korean official, speaking with the condition his name not be used, said improved relations between the East and West, the Soviet Union and the United States and the Soviets and China would have a positive effect on Korea's reunification efforts.
