A dinner at Congregation Kol Ami Oct. 9 began the 1988-89 Salt Lake Jewish Welfare Fund/United Jewish Appeal Campaign. Funds raised are targeted locally for the Jewish Community Center, the religion school, Jewish Family Services and several youth groups.

The UJA portion will go to the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee that assists Jews in 30 countries on four continents, according to Ann Dolowitz, outreach coordinator for the United Jewish Council of Utah. "The money goes for relief, education and rehabilitation - caring for the old as well as the young," she said.Upcoming events for the campaign, which is slated to conclude in April, are a telethon and guest speaker in February and a brunch in March with "righteous gentile" Irene Opdyke. Opdyke was a housekeeper for a Nazi general during World War II and sheltered Jews in his quarters. She will share her experiences during the brunch.

The UJA campaign is chaired by Bernie Solomon, executive director of the United Jewish Council. Art Lipman and Hal Pollock serve as men's division chairs, Helen Jaffe, Vivian Shapiro and Christine McGillis are the women's division chairs.

Rita and Mike Skolnik are chairing the young leadership group and Gary Doctorman is mission chair. Geri Siegal is super Sunday chair and Ann Dolowitz serves as campaign coordinator. Joanne McGillis is consultant, women's division, UJA Western Region Board. Those interested in the campaign may call 581-0098.
