Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics agreed on a two-year contract extension worth a reported $4.2 million per year a week after he complained about the pace of negotiations.

The Celtics announced an agreement in principle to extend Bird's current five-year contract. It had two seasons left and pays him $1.8 million per year, according to Bob Woolf, his attorney.Woolf said Bird, 31, plans to retire when his contract expires after the 1991-1992 season.
