It takes courage to achieve goals, and the best way to get courage is to surround yourself with people who believe in you, a California businessman told a group of BYU students Tuesday.

Dick Seay, division sales manager of Trans Western Publishing, spoke in the Tanner Building as part of the School of Management's entrepreneur lecture series. He said the most effective route to success is to visualize goals in detail and then commit yourself to achieving them."Sometimes you just have to say, `I'm going to take a chance,' and do it," he said. "I visualize goals, I paint pictures of them, and I have achieved every one of those goals."

Seay didn't attend college, but he has created opportunities for himself throughout his career by doing what he does best - selling anything and everything. He's sold newspaper ads, telephone systems and real estate, but his passion is for Yellow Page advertising. In fact, he started his own publishing firm, sold Yellow Page ads and eventually sold the company for a large profit.

"I can sell refrigerators to Eskimos. I'm good at what I do," he said. "People look for help from people who are busy, because they know they can get things done. I went into a business that I knew everything about."

Peay said being an entrepreneur involves a lot of hard work and a measure of risk, but the rewards can be great.

"I work about three hours a day now because I know what I'm doing."
