The Great Salt Lake is dropping rapidly, but not quite as quickly as the Deseret News reported Tuesday.

Through a typographical error, the paper incorrectly quoted William J. Alder, meteorologist in charge of the U.S. Weather Service's Salt Lake City headquarters, as saying that in the first half of the month the lake dropped three inches.Actually, the dip was just under two inches. The correct quote was that the lake dropped three times as far in the first half of the month as it usually drops in the entire month of October.

The Deseret News regrets the error.
