High selenium concentrations in fish and waterfowl at the Stewart Lake Waterfowl Management Area have prompted the state Health Department to issue a public health advisory, officials say.
Pregnant or nursing women and children age 6 and younger should not eat any fish or waterfowl from the Uintah County game management area, the department said, due to evidence of elevated selenium concentrations.Selenium is known to cause skin and gastrointestinal disorders and is a suspected cause of fetal malformations, the state and Uintah Basin District Health Department said.
The agencies also said other adults and children should "limit intake of these sources."
