Chaim Potok, the author of best-selling novels "The Chosen," "The Promise" and "My Name Is Asher Lev," will give free lectures in four Utah cities in October.

He will speak at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Uintah High School Little Theatre in Vernal; at 8 p.m. Oct. 11 in the College of Eastern Utah Little Theatre, Price; at 7 p.m. Oct. 12 in the San Juan County Library, Blanding; and at 8 p.m. Oct. 13 in Kingsbury Hall, Salt Lake City.Potok's visit is sponsored by Friends of the Humanities and the Utah Endowment for the Humanities, which received a grant to bring prominent writers to areas that don't usually get visits, said UEH spokeswoman Ann Floor. She said Salt Lake City was included on the tour because the date will correspond with the Utah Education Association convention, where many of the state's teachers will be gathered.

Public libraries in the four communities will sponsor reading programs and book packages in connection with the visit.
