Offerings for the 1988-89 Performing Arts Series at Utah State University follow the theme "The Nature of Art," stressing its value, variety and flexibility.
The Performing Arts Series, the largest cultural series in Cache Valley, is a collaborative effort between USU and the community. Patrons have a choice of subscribing to specific series: jazz, dance, classical or Utah Symphony Orchestra. A new option is also available this year, a "build your own series," or patrons may subscribe to all events.The following is a breakdown of events and dates for each optional sequence within the 1988-89 Performing Arts Series. The Jazz Series, three events, (adult subscriptions $20, youth $10) opens with the Montreux Band Oct. 15. Members of this jazz ensemble have recorded for the Windham Hill label "New Age" music, a fusion of bluegrass, swing, pop, traditional and jazz.
The Modern Jazz Quartet, Nov. 2, includes legendary jazz musicians Milt Jackson, John Lewis, Percy Heath and Connie Kay, who have performed together for 35 years. And on Nov. 9, "New York Counterpoint: Richard Stolzman and Friends" brings the noted clarinetist with Eddie Gomez, bass, and Bill Douglas, keyboards, in a program of classical works and the top selections from Stoltzman's two best-selling jazz crossover albums.
The Classical Series, six events, sells for $41, youth $21. This opens with Stolzman as above, and continues with the Utah Symphony Chamber Orchestra Dec. 9, performing the complete Brandenburg Concerti by J.S. Bach. The Chicago Chamber Brass comes on Jan. 20, 1988.
The Utah Symphony Orchestra appears on Feb. 8, and the Tokyo String Quartet with cellist Carter Brey on Feb. 17. The Western Opera Theatre concludes the series with "Madame Butterfly" on Feb. 25.
The Utah Symphony Series offers three events, $21 for adults, $11 for youth. These include the Utah Symphony Chamber Orchestra, Dec. 9; Utah Symphony Orchestra, Feb. 8, and Utah Symphony Entertainment Concert, April 17, "All That Jazz," with popular, ragtime and big-band music included.
A Dance Series offers three events, again $21 for adults, $11 youth. These are the North Carolina Dance Theater, Nov. 19, in a return engagement, followed by the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Jan. 26. Ballet West climaxes this series on April 8.
Patrons may choose six or more events from any of the four series and receive a 25 percent discount. Full season subscription is $81 for adults, $41 for youth. Subscriptions are now on sale through the USU ticket office in the Smith Spectrum.
