The House, warning that current safety rules are inadequate, voted Friday to ban lawn darts, a game blamed for thousands of injuries in recent years.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission currently is considering a ban on lawn darts to take effect in 18 months, but House members said the ban should be imposed sooner. The bill, passed on a 304-51 vote and sent to the Senate, directs the commission to ban the darts within 60 days.Over the past eight years, three children have died from lawn dart injuries and a number have been blinded. An estimated 6,000 people, most of them children, have been treated for lawn dart injuries.
