A shootout on the packed midway of the Texas State Fair sent thousands of fairgoers fleeing in panic and ended with one dead and three wounded, authorities said Saturday.

"I heard two or three shots and people in the center - in the middle - started running in every direction," said Juan Salazar, 37, of Dallas, who was high above the midway on a ferris wheel. "After that, you could see people in different spots just running like crazy - just getting away from this area."Many bystanders were knocked down or trampled in Friday night's panic, and several pregnant women went into labor, officials said. One police officer was among the wounded, and two other police officers were injured in related scuffles, officials said.
