Authorities on Monday stepped up rescue operations in four flood-covered states in northern India, where news reports say as many as 800 people have died.

In Pakistan, government officials said Sunday that more than 1 million people had been left homeless by flooding in the eastern part of the country. The official death toll was at 31, but unofficial reports have said many more died.In India's Punjab state, governor S.S. Ray said the three major rivers in the region had receded below danger level, allowing workers to step up relief efforts. However, he said about 200,000 people were still marooned in 1,650 villages and at least 142 people were missing.
