One of four people who required liver transplants after eating extremely poisonous "death cap" mushrooms remained in critical condition Monday, while the other three were in serious condition, doctors said.

A fifth victim was improving and might not need a transplant, doctors said Sunday.Teresa Duncan, 43, of Portland, received her new liver during a seven-hour operation Saturday at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Portland and was listed in critical condition.

Duncan is one of five people who ate the toxic mushrooms Oct. 22, and became ill the next day with serious liver damage. Two of the transplants were performed in Portland and two in San Francisco. The donors were found through a computerized organ matching system.
