The West Valley Freeway, on the drawing board for at least 20 years, may be built in the near future, according to state and city officials.

Gov. Norm Bangerter said Monday the $40 million freeway is now the Salt Lake Valley's top transportation priority. The proposed freeway would run south from I-80 along 40th West to 90th South and would relieve traffic on the newly completely I-215, officials hope.Bangerter said he hopes lawmakers will appropriate money for the freeway as part of the state's general-obligation bonding program. Officials estimate as much as 18 months may be needed to design the project and to acquire the necessary land. Construction may begin in two years and be completed by 1993.

Bangerter, a long-time resident of West Valley City, said the freeway is more important than plans for a light-rail system.
