Thousands of youngsters will be learning how to spell a variety of new words again this year as the Deseret News spelling program enters its 13th year in public, private and parochial schools throughout the state.

Sponsored in cooperation with the Utah State Office of Education, State PTA and Utah Education Association, the program provides word lists for the students to study throughout the school year. In the spring, the words will be used in spelling bees for students in fourth through eighth grades.District winners will compete in the Deseret News Spelling Bee next April to determine a state delegate to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

All classroom, school, district and state meets will be conducted on a "miss-and-out" basis in the traditional spelling bee manner.

A list of 500 words, ranging in difficulty from beginning to advanced, is being distributed this week to participating school districts. The lists will be reproduced and distributed to teachers and students to study throughout the year.

Educators or parents interested in the program may call the Deseret News spelling bee director at 237-2135.
