Maxfield Candy Co., 1050 S. Second West, has added onto its building several times, but the latest addition will more than double the size from 28,000 to 65,000 square feet, according to president Neal D. Maxfield.
When the new space is ready for occupancy later this month, it will allow an increase in production and company officials can increase the number of employees. Maxfield said he employs 85 people, who are gearing up for the coming holiday season, but the new space will allow for the hiring of 40 additional people.Money for the remodeling project came from Zions First National Bank and the Deseret Certified Development Co., the authorized lender of Small Business Administration 504 loans.
Architect Lyle Knudsen of Nelson, Johnson and Partners said the project was challenging because of the many previous additions to the building. The project includes remodeling of the kitchen and expansion of manufacturing and warehousing space.
Maxfield Candy Co. was started at the above location in 1947 by Maxfield's father, Vard.
