Utah Supreme Court justices have refused to lower the bail of a man accused of murdering his infant son two years ago.
Steven Ray James, Logan, had asked the court to lower his bail from $75,000 to $25,000 so he could be released from the Cache County Jail. James has been in jail since Oct. 23, 1986.But justices rejected the motion Monday.
James' trial has been delayed by a series of motions filed by his attorneys. A motion asking that the trial be moved to a different location also is pending with the Utah Supreme Court.
James told police his 3-month-old son, Steven Roy, had been kidnapped from his car while James was shopping in a convenience store. James was arrested after police found the boy's body.
James asked for a reduction in bail, saying the evidence against him is entirely circumstantial. He said his father could post a $25,000 property bond to free James if bail was reduced.
