Overnight aerial spraying to kill a Mediterranean fruit fly infestation left much of the city's West Side looking like Christo artwork, as residents wrapped cars, playground equipment and other belongings in plastic.

Pesticide-laden helicopters criss-crossed a 35-square-mile area until early Friday in the first step of an all-out attack against the medfly, an agricultural pest that destroys about 250 varieties of produce. The insecticide Malathion poses no health risk, agriculture officials said, but they warned residents that the sticky corn syrup in which it was mixed to attract the flies could damage a car's paint.
