Mark W. Hofmann remained in satisfactory condition Saturday night in University Hospital, after undergoing remedial skin-graft surgery on his arm.
The confessed murderer and forger was transported from the Utah State Prison infirmary Tuesday, and surgery was performed the same day, said hospital spokesman John Dwan.He had three small skin grafts re-done that weren't successful during previous surgery, said Anne Bril-linger, associate director of community relations.
Dwan said Saturday he was uncertain when Hofmann will be released. That will depend how long the skin grafts take to heal. From a medical aspect, Hofmann is doing very well, Dwan said.
Hofmann was found comatose Sept. 15 in his prison cell and taken to the hospital for treatment of an overdose of a tricyclic anti-depressant drug. During his first 11-day stay, skin-graft surgery was performed on his arm, where tissue had been injured from a lack of blood circulation due to his lying in one place too long after taking the drug.
Hofmann is serving a five-year-to-life sentence after pleading guilty to the October 1985 pipe-bomb slayings of two people and an elaborate forgery scheme.
