Terence Kern has joined the staff of Ballet West as music director. During the past 10 years, the conductor has been music director of the London Festival Ballet, the Scottish Ballet and the Joffrey Ballet, and has worked with many other companies of international renown. His first official Utah assignment was conducting "Romeo and Juliet," though he guested here last year in "Carmina Burana" and "Anna Karenina." Kern has relocated to Salt Lake from London, with his wife and 2-year-old son.
Others are John Goodman of Brookline, Mass., for a string quartet for the Muir Quartet to play at the Snowbird Institute summer series; Judith Shatin Allen of Charlottesville, Va., for a work for soprano and electronics; and Deborah Drattell of Denver, Colo., for a flute concerto for Ransom Wilson and the Denver Symphony to perform in the 1989 season.* DIRECTOR Ed Austin was proud of his BYU American Folk Dance Ensemble's performance at the opening ceremonies of the Olympics in Seoul. They were one of 12 folk groups worldwide and the only one from North America to participate, with a viewing television audience worldwide of more than 200 million.
