The American Association for State and Local History has given two of its 1988 awards of merit to Peter Goss of Salt Lake City and Gary Peterson of Bountiful.

The two Utahns were among 42 people receiving an award of merit this year "for local history achievement," said association spokesman Stanford Layton.

Goss, an architecture professor at the University of Utah, was recognized for "research in and the promotion of Utah's architectural history and historic preservation," Layton said. He is chairman of the Utah Historic and Cultural Sites Review Committee.

Peterson, a historical geographer, was cited for "interpretation of Utah's historic geography and landscape." He recently co-authored a book with Lowell C. Bennion entitled: "Sanpete Scenes - A Guide to Utah's Heart."
