The space shuttle Atlantis rolls out of the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center in Florida shortly after 1 a.m. on Wednesday. The orbiter's ponderous 4.2-mile trip to its oceanside launch pad took almost eight hours. By 9:15 a.m., the shuttle and its mobile launch stand had been set down on massive pedestals at the pad to close out the glacial journey. Engineers then began making electrical and mechanical connections between the shuttle and ground systems. Atlantis, beefed up and modified in the wake of the Challenger disaster, is scheduled to blast off around the end of the month _ Nov. 28 is the current internal launch target _ to carry a classified military satellite into orbit.
