Ken Garff Enterprises has donated money for up to 10 additional computers, plus software, for Orchard Elementary School in Granite District.

The donation was announced Tuesday during a meeting of the Granite Board of Education. James White, Garff Enterprises' chief executive officer, presented the check for $10,000.The company responded to a request by Lilia Eskelsen, a sixth-grade teacher at Orchard who recently was named Utah's Teacher of the Year. She told Garff officials the school has only six computers for 904 students. She undertook a quest to explore means of adding to the number as part of her career-ladders commitment.

Orchard Principal Archie McCarrie said the expanded computer lab will be in operation soon.

The donation is an example of a growing spirit of cooperation between local businesses and schools, said Granite Superintendent Loren G. Burton. The district recently organized a foundation to facilitate such cooperation with community businesses and individuals.
