The Sandy Redevelopment Agency board - alias the City Council - is tired of waiting for a developer to present it with a firm proposal for an auto mall.
Tuesday night, the board directed RDA Executive Director Richard J. Bradford to tell the two developers considering the project that if they don't come up with proposals soon, the city itself may start signing contracts with auto manufacturers and dealers.The idea of a one-stop-shopping auto mall bringing together several dealers somewhere between I-15 and State Street, 106th and 114th South, has been discussed for about three years. The city has been working on designating an overlay zone and preparing a master plan for about two years, Bradford said.
But a couple of years ago the general economy and the auto market in particular declined sharply, and the two prospective developers, Woodbury Corp. and PMJ Enterprises, were not able to get the commitments they needed from manufacturers and bankers, he said. Now the situation has changed and the city is anxious to get going on the mall next year.
Redevelopment Board members discussed but did not vote on giving the developers a deadline of 30 or 45 days.
