Part of an insurance settlement received by Provo City will go to improvements on the East Bay Golf Course, council members voted Tuesday.
The council decided to set aside $17,000, only a portion of the nearly $76,000 settlement with a contractor, for the golf course budget for trees and miscellaneous improvements. The settlement came after a contractor built a cofferdam (a temporary structure to keep water out of an enclosed area so construction can be done) on the east side of I-15 so he could extend the culvert under the freeway during a high water year.
When the construction was completed, the city experienced some problems with flooding at the golf course.
Chet Waggener, chief administrative officer, said that about a year later, city officials discovered that the cofferdams had only been partially removed and were backing up water onto the golf course.
The problem delayed completion of the golf course and caused the city to incur additional expenses, he said.
The remaining amount from the settlement will go into the general fund before being funneled into departmental budgets, but in Tuesday's study session Councilman Stan Brown suggested the council appropriate $10,000 of that toward the bandstand renovation at Pioneer Park.
The council has not decided where the additional funds will go.
