People who want to vote but need a ride to the polls Tuesday can call "Teamster Voter Express '88," said union spokesman Dino Apedaile.
The shuttle service, sponsored by Teamsters Local 222 and the Hertz Corp., will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. A dispatcher will send a driver to pick up voters. It is available for anyone, said Apedaile, but is especially valuable to people living in long-term-care facilities, such as nursing homes. Hertz is donating the use of two vans, and six to 10 other cars will be available.
"We'll gladly give anybody a ride, but we are especially encouraging those groups," said Apedaile.
Arrangements for a ride can be made before election day by calling 972-1898 and setting a time, he said. On Nov. 8, people can call the same number and a vehicle will be sent for them.
This is the first year the Salt Lake local is offering rides to the polls, said Ralph Taurone, secretary-treasurer of the local, but locals in other parts of the country have offered the service in past elections.
