"School Success: The Missing Ingredient" will focus on the importance of parental involvement in a one-day workshop Nov. 16.

Sponsored by the State Office of Education and the Deseret News, the workshop will look at ways that parents, volunteers, schools and school boards can work together.The workshop will run from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel. It is for parents, teachers, administrators and school board members.

Psychologist Lee Burnham, who has written a book about how children can succeed in school, will deliver the keynote address. Deseret News Education Editor Twila Van Leer will talk about parental involvement in education at the workshop luncheon.

Among workshop topics will be "Child Success in School;" "Working With Parents;" "Volunteers and Funding;" "How Your School Board Works;" "What Parents Can (And Can't) Do;" and "Parents, Kids and Schools."

A special Family Focus segment will show participants how they can teach parents to use the newspaper in developing reading and communication skills at home with their kindergarten to third grader.

Carolyn Dickson, Newspaper in Education manager at the Deseret News, said Family Focus is part of a nationwide program using the newspaper to promote literacy and family communication.

Cooperative sponsors of Family Focus nationwide are the American Newspaper Publishers Association, the International Reading Association, the National Association of Elementary School Principals and the National Congress of Parents and Teachers.

The $17 registration fee includes workshop materials, continental breakfast and luncheon. Schools that bring five-member teams save $2 per participant.
