The acquisition of Joe Barry Carroll gives the New Jersey Nets a quality big man capable of scoring and improving the team's defense and ends the center's short and recently stormy stay with the Houston Rockets.
Carroll, the No. 1 pick in the 1980 NBA draft, was acquired Wednesday by the Nets along with guard Lester Conner in a six-player deal which netted the Rockets guards Frank Johnson and Lorenzo Romar, swingman Tony Brown and 7-foot center Tim McCormick.Carroll has had an ankle problem this preseason and he has been in the doghouse with Houston coach Don Chaney, who openly criticized him.

"He has not been in the games mentally or physically," Chaney said.
