A man accused of pointing a loaded rifle at a South Salt Lake police officer has been charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated assault.

The criminal complaint filed Thursday said Dennis Erickson, 43, South Salt Lake, threatened officer Terry Fritz on Halloween night.Fritz responded to a report of an overdose at 2148 S. Blair St. (340 East), according to the complaint's probable-cause statement.

The officer went to the open front door and entered the house to see what the problem was, the court document said. As Fritz entered, the statement said, a man pointed a .270 hunting rifle at the officer's head.

The man told the officer not to reach for his service revolver, at which time Fritz retreated, the document said. The rifle, according to the document, was later found to be fully loaded with a round in the chamber.
