Sikh militants killed 42 people and wounded 54 Friday in a series of bombings at a crowded market and an attack on a farm in Punjab state, police and news reports said.

A police spokesman in the state capital of Chandigarh said 26 people were killed and 50 wounded when seven bombs exploded in rapid succession at the crowded market of a Hindu neighborhood in Batala, north of Amritsar. He blamed the blasts on Sikhs.Five hours later, six Sikh gunmen in a truck opened fire, killing 16 workers and wounding four at a seed farm near Lawdohwal in the Ludhiana district about 80 miles southeast of Amritsar, the United News of India and the Press Trust of India reported.
