A piece of plastic saved the life of an officer Friday night as he attempted to serve a search warrant.

No one was injured in the incident, about 9 p.m., said Metro Narcotics Lt. Marty Vuyk.Officers, acting on information received earlier in the day, went to an apartment house at 2727 S. Edison St. (140 East) with search warrants seeking cocaine and heroin in the residence and a vehicle.

The five narcotics officers were joined by two South Salt Lake officers and members of Salt Lake City's special weapons team. Officers believed one of two men sought in the incident was armed, Vuyk said.

Officers are investigating the shooting, Vuyk said. "But a shield they (weapon team members) were carrying actually took a hit."

An officer returned fire, the lieutenant said, but no bullets struck the individual. The 5-foot high plastic shield was damaged.

Officers seized "a fair quantity of cocaine" and some heroin in the search, he said.

A second search warrant was served on a residence on the 2500 block of Sixth East, in connection with the South Salt Lake bust, that netted officers 60 pounds of marijuana.

Officials said this was one of five narcotics-related search warrants served in the metropolitan area Friday.
