On the final weekend before the election, the three gubernatorial candidates stumped hard for last-minute votes.

Democrat Ted Wilson and independent candidate Merrill Cook took to the road, while Gov. Norm Bangerter returned to his roots.Wilson, accompanied by his running mate Jim Davis, candidate for lieutenant governor, flew to campaign rallies in Logan, Ogden, Salt Lake, Vernal, Price and St. George. Former Gov. Scott Matheson and congressional candidate Gunn McKay appeared with them.

Speaking in Salt Lake, Wilson pledged support to education and minorities and reminded supporters of the popular Matheson and Rampton administrations.

"I want a government that pays attention to every child in the state," he said. "I want a government for women, Hispanics, blacks and every minority group in the state."

While Wilson flew around the state, Bangerter spoke at Brigham Young University Saturday morning and then attended a special luncheon in West Valley City, his home ground.

"He wanted to end up back at his roots, so to speak," said Dave Buhler, Bangerter's campaign manager.

The luncheon was put on by his campaign to honor long-time friends
