The sentence of an Orem man who last month pleaded no contest to child sexual abuse has been deferred 18 months and the man has been placed on probation instead for the same period.

Glen T. Mitchell, 21, who pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a child last May 15, was fined $1,250 and ordered to violate no laws during his probation. He could have received up to 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine for the charge, a second-degree felony.As part of Mitchell's probation, 4th District Judge George E. Ballif ordered the defendant to serve 30 days in jail with therapy and work release. He deferred the jail time pending a six-month review.
