The University of Utah chemistry faculty has been ranked first among the nation's state-funded universities for the amount of per-faculty support in federal dollars, according to a professional magazine.
A recent issue of Chemical Engineering also reported that the U. chemistry department ranked 21st among all institutions in overall support for chemical research and development. The U.'s ranking placed it above a number of prestigious private colleges, including Yale, Princeton and Northwestern.In 1986, the last year of available statistics, 15 of the 29 U. chemistry faculty generated $4.79 million in federal support. B. Stanley Pons, chemistry department chairman, said that amounts to federal funding of $165,000 per faculty member.
