Experts are examining a painting recently found in Venezuela to determine if it is a self-portrait of the Renaissance master Raphael.
The painting, the property of an unidentified Venezuelan millionaire, was sent to Italy so its origins could be investigated, Italian press reports said. The work measures 19 by 14 inches and is painted on canvas, the Italian news agency AGI reported.
The work was spotted in Venezuela by an Italian professor, Nico Nicosia, dean of the State Institute of Art in Urbino, Raphael's hometown in northern Italy. Nicosia says he would like to see Italy acquire the work.
