In an unexpected move, a South African court Monday granted bail to a prominent union leader and four other black activists held for up to 30 months while on trial for treason. The Johannesburg Supreme Court granted bail to Moses Mayekiso, head of the country's largest metalworkers union, and four co-defendants charged with attempting a political takeover of Alexandra, an impoverished township adjoining Johannesburg. Mayekiso was released on bail of 10,000 rand, or $4,200. The others each paid $2,100. Four of the men, including Mayekiso, spent more than 900 days in custody, while the fifth had been held almost 700 days. The case adjourned last month and is to resume in February.
