The U.S. Department of Labor has sent a $166,000 incentive grant to the Wasatch Front South Private Industry Council that will increase the number of people served by Job Training Partnership Act-funded job training programs.
Lynn C. Rowe, community relations manager for Salt Lake County's Division of Job Training and Development, said the council earned the extra money by placing first among nine service areas in Utah, exceeding all operating standards for its job training and placement programs for the year ending last June. The private industry councils in Davis County and the Uintah Basin placed second and third, respectively.
The council serves economically disadvantaged people with barriers to employment in Salt Lake and Tooele counties. PIC-sponsored programs served 2,600 people last year. At the completion of their training, Rowe said, 75 percent of the people found full-time work with starting wages ranging from $4.50 to $89.15 per hour.
The PIC is a voluntary group of local executives who represent private business, labor, education, vocation training, economic development, public employment, rehabilitation and community-based organization, Rowe said.
