Two Utah high school students were appointed Thursday to the 1989 U.S. Senate Youth Program by Sens. Jake Garn and Orrin Hatch, both R-Utah.
Jeff Anderson of Olympus High School and Joel Curzon of Spanish Fork High School will be in Washington Jan. 28 to Feb. 4 with 102 other elected high school student body officers nationwide for an intensive study of the federal government.They will spend time in the offices of their senators and attend briefings with the president, leading cabinet members, a Supreme Court justice and members of Congress.
Anderson serves at his school as senior tribunal representative. He is a National Honor Society vice president and a member of the National Forensic League. He has also served on Hatch's Youth Advisory Council.
Curzon resides in Salem. He is a member of his student council, debate class president and a scholastic all-American. He is also chairman of the Utah Council of Teenage Republicans.
Hatch and Garn said in a joint statement, "Jeff and Joel were selected to represent Utah because of their strong interest in government, their scholastic achievements and their outstanding community and academic involvement."
Chosen as alternates to the program were David McIllece, a Hillcrest High School student, and Julie Stewart, who attends Park City High School.
The program is made possible by a grant from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, which awards each delegate a $2,000 scholarship.
