The Soviet state prosecutor on Tuesday demanded a 15-year sentence on Yury Churbanov, son-in-law of former Kremlin chief Leonid Brezhnev, at his trial in Moscow on corruption charges.

The prosecutor, Alexander Sboyev, said Churbanov who was first deputy minister of the interior under Brezhnev, should serve five years in jail and 10 years in a labor camp "for his especially serious crimes."Galina Brezhnev did not appear in court to hear the prosecutor's demand. It was after divorcing his first wife and marrying Galina that Churbanov experienced what Sboyev called "a meteoric rise" from junior police official.

Churbanov was also a candidate member of the Soviet Communist Party's policy-setting Central Committee.
