An Orem man charged with attempted criminal homicide, a second-degree felony, has pleaded guilty to lesser charges as a result of a plea agreement and will be sentenced Jan. 13.

Efrain Beltran, 38, was to stand trial last month after pleading not guilty to charges that he attacked 17-year-old Dino Lucero of Salt Lake. Beltran allegedly attacked the man with a machete and fired one shot at him with a handgun, missing his head by six inches.During an appearance before 4th District Judge George E. Ballif on Friday, Beltran pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, both third-degree felonies. Attempted criminal homicide charges were dropped in exchange for Beltran's guilty pleas.
