Pledges and collections to the 1988 Salt Lake United Way campaign totaled $3,975,903 as of Dec. 15.

The amount represents 79 percent of the drive's $5,031,195 goal.Shopko Stores reported their first-time campaign results this week. Donations from Salt Lake, Murray, Sandy and West Jordan stores totaled $4,284.

"A United Way campaign is a little like mountain climbing, " said Ross E. Kendell, president of Key Bank and campaign chairman for 1988. "The last distance is the most difficult. We're still expecting final reports from many campaigns. And nearly every day brings a report that is higher than we had anticipated. We're still on course on our climb toward that goal."
