Vanguard, founded in 1926, is a small publishing house with about 500 titles in print. It originally introduced the works of numerous important writers and its backlist includes many works by James T. Farrell, Joyce Carol Oates and Pierre Boulle, as well as the first two early novels by Nobel Prize laureate Saul Bellow - "Dangling Man" and "The Victim."
