The nation's richest man finally gave in to a district court in Forth Worth, Texas. After weeks of trying to avoid getting involved, Sam Walton, chairman of Wal-Mart and possessor of a $6 billion fortune, gave a two-hour deposition in a lawsuit filed by Andrew Carrizales, 28, who wants $6 million after falling in a Wal-Mart store in Sulphur Springs two years ago. A judge had threatened to fine Walton $1 million a day unless he showed up in court. Wal-Mart attorneys had contended that Walton could add nothing in his testimony and that the company defends about 1,000 such "slip and fall" lawsuits a year. The usually affable Walton, 70, left the courtroom without commenting.
