The youngest female to be certified as an adult in a homicide case is scheduled for a Jan. 5 jury trial on second-degree murder charges.
Attorneys for Venus Sherard, 17, appeared Friday before 3rd District Judge David S. Young during a pretrial hearing. Young ordered the trial go forward as scheduled next month.Sherard was 16 when she was charged with the March 7, 1987, stabbing death of Ruby Kelly, 23. Both were attending a party at 1018 E. Seventh South when a fight broke out.
Witnesses told Salt Lake police Sherard asked someone to get a knife because she wanted to "get that girl in the red sweater." The victim died from multiple stab wounds.
