A West Valley woman remained in good condition Saturday in Holy Cross Hospital following an apartment fire Friday that forced her and three others to escape from a bedroom window.
West Valley Fire Capt. Fred Dumas said Lisa Edwards, 26, suffered minor bruises and cuts when she fell about 15 feet to the ground as she was being helped out of the window of her second-story apartment at 3854 W. 3390 South. She was also being treated for smoke inhalation, a nursing supervisor said.A 2-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy, both children of Edwards, were handed down from the window to volunteers and firefighters. The children and James DeBoe, 28, were treated for smoke inhalation and released from Pioneer Valley Hospital.
"Because of the fire and the heat they couldn't get out the front door and had to jump out the bedroom window," Dumas said. Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, but Dumas said it began in the living room area of Edwards' apartment and quickly spread vertically to a third-floor apartment.
"There was a lot of potential for the fire to spread easily in these types of apartments," he said. Firefighters, however, quickly extinguished the flames and contain the fire to two apartments. Damage was estimated at $160,000.
