For years, Proxmire has bestowed this famous award every month on whatever federal project or agency he thinks has most brazenly or irresponsibly wasted the taxpayers' money. Though he is now leaving the Senate, the non-profit, non-partisan taxpayers group has elected him to its board. It will start announcing his "Fleece" picks in January.Congressional leaders like to pretend that federal spending has already been slashed to the bone. Proxmire and his new allies know better.
