A fire Sunday, apparently caused by a careless smoker, destroyed a downtown South Bend, Ind., hotel used as a rooming house for disaster victims, killing one person, injuring nine and forcing the evacuation of more than 100 residents, authorities said. The Morningside Hotel, built in 1924, primarily housed victims of other fires and disasters who could pay for low rent housing. A nearby homeless shelter and worshippers from a neighboring church helped those displaced by the fire.
